The 3-D Image Exhibit: http://southport.jpl.nasa.gov/3dpic.html The following images were obtained from either earth orbit by SIR-C (on the Space Shuttle Endeavour), or from an airborne laboratory (AIRSAR) flying at 33,000 ft. By acquiring and processing "Interferometric SAR" data from these instruments, we can obtain maps of the topography of the areas illuminated by these imaging radars. From these maps of topography, we can form perspective views, 3-d analglyphs, and video fly-bys of the data (using the radar brightness as the intensity and the color indicating either height contours or frequency /polarization effects). How to See Stereo: http://uwmml.pharmacy.wisc.edu/howtostereo.html How to See Stereo Modelling Pictures! There are two kinds of stereo images, relaxed and crossed. Stereo images of a small peptide. . . .
Warning! Danger! Enantiamorph Problems!!!!!! Viewing a crossed stereo in relaxed mode can produce strange results! For those in Chemistry, This will cause the enantiamorph to flip. This means that an R stereochemistry will be S and an S sterochemistry will be R. In fact all L amino acids in protein become D and vice versa. Also what's in front becomes the back and the back becomes the front. For simple stick images, it may not look strange, but more complex surfaces may be impossible to see.
Are you concerned? Maybe the overall conclusions of the view is the same in either image, but it makes a big difference to chemists who wish to come to the same conclusions as the authors of the images. And especially to biologists since all the natural amino acids in proteins are not D but L.

Stereograms - How they work: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pagrosse/StereoExp.htm This page attempts to explain how various types of stereograms work whether they are SIRDS; Red/green; double image or whatever.
The World of 3D: http://cs.bmcc.cc.or.us/StuProj/CS121W00/Woydziak/Home.html The first random dot stereogram, like the one shown above, was invented by Dr. Bela Julesz in 1959 as an experiment to test stereopsis, the ability to see in 3D. I came across a Bell Monograph detailing this work quite by chance in the Physics Library at Queen's University in about 1965. I consider this to be a quite remarkable piece of research in that it established that a very significant amount of processing was required for the brain to finally recognize -- or, better yet -- construct, a three-dimensional interpretation. Some who tried it took a half minute. Others a minute or more. Others never did see the effect.
