Older quotes of the day

"Philosophy is written in this grand book - I mean universe -- which stands continuously open to our gaze, but which cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles and other geometric figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth." -- Galileo (1623)

"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind." -- Thomas Paine

"I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved - the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!" -- John Adams

Monks have never had to wear earplugs to vespers. -- Bernard D. Sherman, author of Inside early music

"The past is not dead. It isn't even past." -- William Faulkner

'The future is almost here. It just hasn't quite happened yet.' -- Wayne

"Martyrdom is the only way in which a person with no ability can become great." -- George Bernard Shaw

"No sooner had Jesus knocked over the dragon of superstition then Paul boldly set it on its legs again in the name of Jesus." -- George Bernard Shaw

'If you want to live in a a country run by religion, move to Iran , Saudi Arabia, or Afghanistan. Just don't be caught praying to the wrong god there: you could be executed for doing so. (Just as the Bible [and the Koran?] advises. Commandment No. 1.)' -- Wayne

"Our civilization is still in a middle stage, no longer wholly guided by instinct, not yet wholly guided by reason." -- Theodore Dreiser, author (1871-1945).

"I believe the spreading of Catholicism to be the most horrible means of political and social degradation left in the world." -- Charles Dickens

Since logic, reason, and historical precision play no part in Christianity, unfortunately, these disciplines are useless in discussions with Christians. -- ?

"I call Christianity the one great curse, the one great intrinsic depravity, the one great instinct of revenge, for which no means are venomous enough, or secret, subterranean and small enough -- I call it the one immortal blemish upon the human race." -- Friedrich Nietzsche

Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler'. -- Albert Einstein.

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." -- Philip K. Dick

And now, for our test questions!

Download times: For each of the following off-page links to my pages, the (a), print-page size, and (b), download time, are given in the format launch text (a pages, b seconds [nominal]). Are the given nominal times those for a 28 KB modem? Probably. A page (8.5" x 11") is about 25 KBytes. It helps to know, for example, that the Satire page is 21 pages long, with a nominal download time of 124 seconds (as calculated by FPXpress). This Home (Index) page is (11 p, 37 s). I am connected through Bell Sympatico DSL service (as a terminal on a LAN through dedicated phone line) at a nominal 960 KBits/sec. (but, about 640 lately in practice) using a Nortel 1 MByte/sec. modem. That is about 30 times as fast as a 28-Kb modem.

Details about Web addresses and host sites

This is the home page of Wayne's Web site created by Wayne Paulson, updated 3 Feb 01 (on Sympatico), and 6 Feb 01 4:45 am (on TerraShare.com), created 8 Feb 01 at TopCities, and updated there on 9 Feb 01.

The home address of this page is threefold for now, as follows:

(a) built beginning 1 Feb 01, but soon to be abandoned for lack of support and proper file-handling capabilities, as http://waynepaulson.terrashare.com/Index.htm; and,

(b) has also existed, and will remain for some short time, for backup purposes only, as http://www3.sympatico.ca/waynerp/Index.htm; and,

(c) being built beginning 8 Feb 01 (updated 9 Feb 01) at TopCities as http://waynepaulson.topcities.com/, using the Home page files index and Index instead of just Index as used in the above.

Each URL address is case-sensitive.

Some images were not showing, but I now know why*, and have fixed it all today (9 Feb 01). * It has to do with the fact that some software cannot tell the difference between the character strings gif and GIF, if you can imagine -- but the difference is vitally important! I will have some nasty comments to make about this in my Gripes page soon! They are comments directed at the short-sightedness of the software industry in general, and not against TopCities. TopCities did its job: it knows the distinction between upper and lower case, as do children in grade school -- but the software industry as a whole does not seem to yet.
