I have a wide range of interests -- some of them technical, social, and scientific -- others somewhat philosophical, broadly political, and critical of some religious ideas and their consequences. A primary interest is my ongoing development of a computer program (ConjPic) which exploits Iterated Function Systems (a branch of Fractal Geometry) for the creation of images without the need for drawing or painting in any traditional sense. Another abiding interest is to look around me and wonder why we do things in a way which I find to be contrary to good sense; I call it "Gripes: Why things don't work well". Thirdly, I spend far too much time surfing the Net!
This Home page links to pages that contain writings and images that are either my own original work, text and images plagiarized from the Web, links to other World Wide Web (WWW) sites or to other pages of my site, or mixtures of these. Wherever possible, I try to credit the original source. Also, wherever possible, I follow the injunction of the mathematician and singer Tom Leher: "Plagiarize! Let no one else's work evade your eyes!".

Navigation of my site:
My site employs hyperlinks (a) to WWW sites, (b) to other pages of my site, and (c) within some pages. Each of my pages includes a hyperlink (Go Home) which you can click on to return to this home page. In any case, you can always return from the destination of a hyperlink to its launching point by pressing the Back button on your browser.
There is a distinction between these two ways of returning from the destination of a hyperlink. When you click on "Go Home" you will return to the top of this Home page. If, instead, you click on the Back button, you will return to the part of the page from which you launched the first link. The latter method is usually more convenient.

In the following paragraphs I comment on the design of this site. I have a more general page dealing with faulty design, alias bad design, at Gripes.
My basic design principle is to keep this site simple to use, simple in appearance, and free of the latest in flashing images and graphics clutter. In other words, just because we have invented the jackhammer, it does not mean that we have to use one to push a thumbtack into a bulletin board -- and add its sound effects (in stereo)! Besides, not everyone has a 1,000 megabit/sec. connection to the Internet (yet)! For example, I did not include the Blue Ribbon logo in place of the Free Speech satement below, partly because I think that it is an image map (with complications), not just an image.
Despite these ideal aspirations, this site will not be free of the occasional snide remark! Life is too short to be too serious!
Whenever there is a risk of confusing two levels of text, namely, (a) this level in which I am now writing, and (b) text copied from the Web, I shall present my comments in the default color (appearing as black to most viewers), sometimes [in square brackets]. Text copied from the Web is generally in maroon and whatever other colors tagged along for the ride. In cases, such as for my Humor and Satire pages, a different convention holds, in which my commentary text is generally in blue or red, as is explained on that page.
I will not try to infiltrate your system with any hidden software or bots. My system has virus protection, if that is of any comfort (probably not!).

From Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, I obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Science (1960), Honours Physics and Mathematics, Master of Science (1965) and Doctor of Philosophy (1969), Experimental Nuclear Physics.
I worked for several years starting in 1969 with IBM Canada Ltd. and Statistics Canada in programming and systems design and development, then joined the Dept. of Public Works and Government Services Canada where, instead of playing with computers, I negotiated contracts for their purchase and lease, as a Senior Engineering Procurement Officer. I also worked closely with lawyers developing contractual wording for many types of computer contracts for general use.
Now that I am happily retired, I am back to playing with computers!
My wife Eleanor (nee Eleanor Jean Gilders) and I were married in Peterborough, Ont. in 1963. We met at Queen's where she completed her B.A. (1960) in Chemistry, Biology and English. She has been Manager, Editorial and Production Services, in the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, Health Canada. As a member and long-time executive officer of the Canada Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association, she has brought me along to its annual conferences in many a North American city.
And now, here is Eleanor.
These pictures were taken a few years before I forgot to shave every day! They are 32.0 KB jpg images, scanned in compliments of my friend David Wray.
And, here I am again, in Dec., 2001, whiskas and all, compliments of David Wray again!
